IBRO-APRC Singapore Associate School of Neuroscience
July 3 - 7, 2017
Organizer: Associate Prof. S. Thameem Dheen (President, Singapore Neuroscience Association); Associate Prof. Gavin Dawe (Secretary, Singapore Neuroscience Association)
Aims and Scope of the School:
This 5-day “IBRO Associate School” is designed for young aspiring neuroscientists (MBBS, MSc and PhD students and young post-docs) from Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region, to offer them an interactive platform to discuss and broaden their understanding of the functioning of the nervous system in health, disease and aging. In addition, cutting edge translational methods such as neuroimaging and various animal models of disease used in investigating the biological and clinical basis of various diseases of the nervous system will be discussed. This intensive school aims to provide a holistic perspective of the cutting edge techniques used in clinical and basic neuroscience, to enable participants in performing competitive neuroscience research. This school would be mainly conducted by the Singapore Neuroscience Association (SNA) in partnership with the Department of Anatomy at NUS, which will gather world-renowned, expert neuroanatomists and neuroscientists to interact with, and train the participants.
The framework of the Neuroscience School will include lectures by eminent neuroscientists on various topics including nervous system disorders (Alzheimer’s, stroke, neuropsychological illnesses), neuroinflammation, animal models of neurological disorders (zebrafish, drosophila, C.elegans, rodents and primates), experimental neuroimaging tools (electron microscopy, optogenetics and confocal imaging) and electrophysiology. In addition to the lectures, workshops will be conducted on various topics to provide participants with visual experience in observing animal models, histological samples and advanced electrophysiology methodologies. Further, the Singapore Neuroscience Association plans to host the SNA Symposium 2017 on July 6th , 2017, a one-day symposium with talks by leading neuroscientists, poster and oral presentations on various topics such as neuroscience in health, disease and aging.
