    IBRO-UCT African Advanced School on Techniques in Neuroscience

    Aims and Scope of the School:

    This advanced neuroscience school aims to provide lectures and training on major techniques and tools that are commonly used in neuroscience research.


    This IBRO Advanced School on Techniques in Neuroscience will allow junior researchers, senior PhD students and postdoctoral fellows to gain knowledge and experience in various advanced techniques that are widely applied in neuroscience research. Attendees will receive lectures and practical training on electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, calcium imaging and stereology from experts in the field, as well as lectures on highly advanced in vivo techniques, such as in vivo optogenetic manipulations and fiber photometry. The school will also include methods for analyzing mouse behavior to train the participants on how to connect changes in the brain with behavioral output. The clinical content of the school will educate trainees on the importance of basic research translation in clinical investigations of neurological disorders.

    Who should apply to this School?

    Applications are open to highly motivated senior Ph.D. & MD students, post-doctoral fellows, registrars & junior faculty currently residing in Africa who are engaged in basic neuroscience research, clinical research, and/or engineering, with a strong interest in learning and possibly implementing advanced neuroscience techniques in their research. Applicants will be selected on merit, based on their CVs. Consideration will also be given to ensure participation of trainees from different parts of Africa.

    What costs will be covered for selected applicants?

    Accommodation in a hostel and meals will be provided. Assistance with travel expenses to South Africa will be available if required and adequately motivated.
